Our School Overview

 

MISSION STATEMENT:  We believe that with the dedication and perseverance of the Columbus Global Academy community, every member can overcome obstacles and find success, working to the best of his/her ability in empowering students to pursue their own dreams and voices in cultivating an environment in which understanding, respect, and helping others is the norm. 

 

VISION STATEMENT:  The Columbus Global Academy is a positive and respectful environment that welcomes creativity and collaboration among staff, students and community. We are committed to challenging our students to excel in their academics while preparing them to be productive members in society.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMStudents at Columbus Global Academy receive ESL support in all content areas (math, science, social studies) as well as an intensive language arts instruction.  The level of instruction is adjusted to meet the needs of the students enrolled.  Instructional assistants, who are fluent in another language, assist teachers and work one-on-one and with small groups of students and facilitate communication with families.  An initial emphasis is placed on the development of social skills and familiarity with school routines.

 

Upon completion of introductory courses to build basic skills, the following middle and high school courses required for graduation are available to students at Columbus Global Academy:  reading and language arts, math, science, history 6 – 8, English literature 9 – 12, physical science, biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, math 1, math 2, math 3, math 4, globalization, world studies, US studies, democratic citizenship, physical education, health, computer literacy, Spanish, art and music.  Students also have access to the district’s career center programs, virtual high school courses and early college dual-credit courses.

 

Instruction at Columbus Global Academy promotes content area learning within the five designated second language acquisition skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing and cultural enrichment. Columbus Global Academy provides the support that English language learners (ELLs) need in order to meet grade level promotion and graduation requirements, while facilitating the acculturation process and familiarity with US society.

 

Over fifty five countries are represented at Columbus Global Academy including: Afganistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Burma, Burundi, China, Colombia, Congo, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guatemala, Guinea, Honduras, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Palestine, Puerto Rico, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, Venezuela, Vietnam, and Yemen.

 

The Columbus Global Academy staff speaks many different languages, which facilitates communication with parents and community members.  In addition to English, which all staff members speak, other languages spoken include Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Fulani, French, German, Italian, Mai Mai, Nepali, Portuguese, Russian, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Spanish and Swahili.

 

Recent Awards, Accomplishments, and Achievements:

2011- FBI Director’s Community Service Award

2011- Red Cross Community Service Award

2012-2014- #1 ranked school in the district in First In Math 2014 School Improvement Grant Recipient –

2012-2014- #1 ranked school in the district in Value

 

School Goals:

1. Increase student achievement in reading and math.

2. Each student will gain at least 200 Lexile points in reading each year.

3. Students move up at least 1 level on the OTELA test each year.

4. Increase the graduation rate of our ELL.

 

Strategies for Improvement:

1. OGT Tutoring during the school day – helping to increase student achievement

2.  RTI– implement math and reading interventions to better meet our students needs

3. Saturday School – Ongoing tutoring program to meet the needs of our students.

4. Reading Clinic – Using reading strategies to help our students improve literacy, content, and vocabulary.

 

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS:

 

Columbus Global Academy is excited to partner with diverse organizations that help improve our students lives.

 

Columbus Global Academy is proud to work with partners that assist our students with improving their lives. We have partnerships with organizations such as: I Know I Can, Adelante, Thrive, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, Project Mentor, DeVry Kids, and the FBI.  This year we are also engaged in bringing in consultants to assist our staff in cultural proficiency with programs like Street Talk  with The "Amazing" Tei Street and Mr. Andre Lampkins.  

Special Services:

Reading Intervention Center
is utilized to provide small group intervention to the students who are reading English in the 1st grade or lower.  
In addition, we offer many services to address non-academic barriers.
Example of those are :
-Comunnity in Schools, to assits students with resources to help outside of school.
and
-Buckeye Ranch, who works with male and female Somali groups.
Aditionally we work with bilingual mentors through the district Mentoring Initiative.
